1.   Egg  : The life of a monarch butterfly begins as a tiny egg, usually laid on the underside of milkweed leaves by a female butterfly.

2.   Caterpillar (Larva)  : After a few days, the egg hatches into a caterpillar. This stage is characterized by rapid growth, as the caterpillar voraciously consumes milkweed leaves, storing energy for its next transformation.

3.   Chrysalis (Pupa)  : Once fully grown, the caterpillar forms a chrysalis. Inside this protective casing, it undergoes metamorphosis, transforming into an adult butterfly.

4.   Adult Butterfly  : After about two weeks, the adult monarch emerges from the chrysalis. Its wings are initially soft and crumpled but soon harden and expand, preparing it for flight.

### The Incredible Migration of Monarch Butterflies

-   Northbound Journey. : In the spring, monarchs begin their journey north, laying eggs along the way. The new generations continue the migration, eventually reaching as far north as Canada.

-   Southbound Journey. : In the fall, the butterflies that emerge are part of the "super generation," capable of flying up to 3,000 miles to their wintering sites, where they cluster together in large groups to survive the winter.
